Googong: Canberra Region’s Most Sustainable Township

As the world changes, the way we live must evolve, too. Fortunately, a move to Googong means that living a sustainable lifestyleand doing your part for the planet has never been easier.

A green community

Googong was awarded the Green Building Council of Australia’s first 5-Star Green Star – Communities rating in 2016; a rating that was reaccredited in 2020, and confirmed and extended to 2026 in recognition of the deliverables achieved since the original certification. Impressive, right?

With such a notable accreditation, it’s no wonder that the community is brimming with sustainable elements.

Take Googong’s Integrated Water Cycle system that recycles over 60% of water used in the township.

The theme of recycling continues through the installation of six netball courts and adjacent carpark made from an asphalt mix of soft plastics, glass, toner and reclaimed road.

In a first for the Canberra region, the recycled road product – known as Reconophalt – was successfully used at the netball precinct, before being used more widely on select roads throughout the Googong community. A kilometre of road paved with Reconophalt can contain 500,000 plastic bags and packaging equivalents, 165,000 glass bottle equivalents and toner from 12,000 used printer cartridges.

In addition, there are a number of electric charging stations embedded throughout the township for ease of living, as more electric vehicles hit the road.

Nature surrounds

Googong’s nature surrounds – with lush bush and the Googong Foreshores – is the perfect setting for the sustainably-minded region.
